Kenya is marking the 36th anniversary of Saba Saba Day, a defining moment in the country's democratic journey that paved the way for the return of multiparty politics after years of one-party rule.
On July 7, 1990, pro-democracy leaders, including Kenneth Matiba, Charles Rubia and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, defied a government ban to demand political reforms. Their calls sparked nationwide protests that became a turning point in Kenya's struggle for democratic freedoms.
Thirty-six years later, the anniversary has evolved beyond commemorating the fight for multiparty democracy. It now serves as a platform for renewed demands for human rights, accountability, and economic justice.
This year's commemorations are being led by civil society organisations under the theme "Our Lives Matter, Freedom, Dignity, Justice." Organisers have planned peaceful marches across the country, with Nairobi demonstrators expected to assemble at Jevanjee Gardens before proceeding through the Central Business District to Parliament Buildings.
Participants are expected to present petitions calling for investigations into alleged extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and excessive use of force by security agencies. They are also urging Parliament to strengthen police oversight and implement reforms aimed at protecting constitutional rights.
