Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has dismissed claims that he is a political "project" being groomed for the 2027 General Election, insisting that he is an independent political leader guided by his own convictions.
Speaking on July 2, 2026, Sifuna described allegations linking him to former President Uhuru Kenyatta as propaganda, rejecting claims that his political activities are being financed or directed by external actors.
The senator was responding to assertions by politicians aligned with the broad-based government arrangement, including members of his own party, who have suggested that he is being positioned as part of a broader political strategy ahead of the next election.
Sifuna maintained that he is not receiving financial or political backing from Uhuru Kenyatta or any other individual, saying his positions are based on principle rather than sponsorship.
His remarks come against the backdrop of growing divisions within ODM, where his Linda Mwananchi faction has increasingly found itself at odds with members supporting cooperation with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Sifuna reiterated that he is open to working with opposition leaders, including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Jubilee Party’s Fred Matiang’i, in efforts to mount a united challenge against President William Ruto.
However, he stressed that the opposition should first agree on a common national agenda before settling on a presidential flag bearer, arguing that shared policies and priorities are more important than personalities at this stage.
