Uninsulated and poorly designed electricity infrastructure is increasingly being blamed for the sharp decline of Kenya’s raptor populations, with conservationists warning that power lines have become deadly traps stretching across the country’s landscapes.
As Kenya expands electricity access and transmission networks across open grasslands and wildlife habitats, birds of prey that rely on elevated perches and broad hunting ranges are paying the price through electrocution and mid-air collisions.
Studies published in scientific conservation research indicate dramatic population declines over four decades among some of Kenya’s iconic raptor species. The losses have raised alarm among wildlife experts who warn that the trend threatens ecological balance and protected ecosystems.
Among the hardest hit are:
- Long-crested eagle — population decline of about 94%
- Augur buzzard — population decline of about 91%
- Hooded vulture — population decline of about 88%
According to conservation specialists working in Kenya, electrocution has overtaken traditional threats such as poisoning and road accidents as the leading cause of injury and death among raptors.
Why the power network is becoming dangerous
Experts point to several design factors:
Conductive concrete poles
Older wooden gum poles provided natural insulation for birds landing on electricity structures. The shift toward steel-reinforced concrete poles has increased the likelihood of electrical circuits forming when large birds perch.
Unsafe cross-arm layouts
Large-winged raptors can accidentally connect live conductors and grounded structures, causing instant electrocution or severe injury.
Invisible transmission lines
Many high-voltage lines lack flight diverters or visibility markers, increasing collision risks for fast-flying birds and species moving through low-visibility conditions.
Conservation groups argue that solutions already exist—including insulated components, safer pole designs and bird-flight markers—but warn that action is needed quickly to prevent further losses while also reducing costly wildlife-related power disruptions.
