An emotional moment unfolded at the Wamunyu Law Courts after a former convict, Mwendwa Kilatya, returned to personally thank the magistrate who had sentenced him to prison, saying the punishment became the turning point that transformed his life.
The unexpected meeting took place on July 2, 2026, moments before Resident Magistrate Eugene Pascal Nabwana was due to begin the day's court proceedings. Kilatya visited the court to express his gratitude, explaining that his time in prison gave him an opportunity to reflect, reform, and rebuild his future.
Rather than allowing his sentence to define him, Kilatya used his time behind bars to pursue education. He successfully sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations while in prison, a milestone he credits with opening the door to a fresh start.
His journey has been hailed by the Kenya Psychological Counselling Association as a model of successful rehabilitation, with the association praising his resilience, discipline, and determination to reintegrate into society.
Although imprisonment came at a personal cost, including the breakdown of his marriage, Kilatya has since rebuilt his life and now earns a living through casual construction work in Machakos County.
Magistrate Nabwana said he was deeply moved by the visit, noting that the encounter reaffirmed the importance of fair and compassionate justice. He urged judicial officers to recognize their ability to positively influence offenders through their decisions and words, emphasizing that every individual deserves an opportunity for rehabilitation and a second chance.
