Kenya's reputation as a global athletics powerhouse is once again under scrutiny following a series of high-profile doping sanctions, the latest being a seven-year ban handed to former half-marathon world record holder Kibiwott Kandie by the Athletics Integrity Unit.

Kandie was sanctioned after being found guilty of refusing to provide a sample and tampering with the anti-doping process. His suspension follows similar action against other elite Kenyan athletes, including Olympian Benard Kibet Koech, raising fresh concerns about the integrity of the country's athletics programme.

The Athletics Integrity Unit says doping in Kenya has become increasingly sophisticated, with some cases involving organised networks that allegedly use medical personnel to facilitate the use of banned substances and falsify medical records.

The continued violations are taking a toll beyond the track. International race organisers are reportedly becoming more cautious when inviting Kenyan athletes to major competitions, citing concerns over the country's doping record. This threatens opportunities for athletes and could weaken Kenya's long-standing dominance in distance running.

In response, the government has intensified funding for anti-doping programmes through the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya, while Parliament is considering amendments to sports laws aimed at criminalising sports manipulation and dismantling networks involved in the supply of prohibited performance-enhancing substances.
