The fate of 67 students from Lenana School now hangs in the balance after the school's Board of Management recommended their expulsion over their alleged involvement in violent unrest at the institution.
The disciplinary cases have been referred to the Nairobi County Education Board, which is expected to make the final decision on whether the students should be expelled.
The crisis began on June 1, 2026, when violent disturbances broke out during evening preparation sessions at the Nairobi-based national school. The following day, the Board of Management temporarily closed the institution and sent all boarding students home in an effort to restore calm.
The school later began a phased readmission programme on June 10 to allow learning to resume.
On July 24, the Board of Management referred the cases involving the 67 students identified as suspected leaders of the unrest to the County Education Board for final adjudication.
Under Kenya's education regulations, a school's Board of Management can recommend the expulsion of a student but does not have the final authority to impose the punishment. The Nairobi County Education Board is therefore expected to review the cases before making a final determination on the students' fate.
