The revival of the Gilgil–Ol Kalou–Nyahururu railway line is expected to provide residents and businesses with a more affordable transport alternative following the official resumption of services by Kenya Railways.

After more than four decades of inactivity, the restored rail corridor is not only reconnecting communities in Nyandarua and Nakuru counties but also offering passengers and traders access to transport at standard rates that are significantly lower than many road-based alternatives.

Transport stakeholders say affordable fares could encourage more residents to embrace rail travel, particularly for regular commuting and the movement of agricultural produce. Farmers in the region are expected to benefit from reduced transportation costs, enabling them to move goods to markets more efficiently and at lower prices.

The railway's return is also anticipated to ease pressure on roads by shifting some passenger and freight traffic to rail, a mode of transport widely regarded as cost-effective and reliable for bulk cargo.

Local traders have welcomed the development, noting that lower transport expenses could translate into better profit margins and potentially lower commodity prices for consumers.

Kenya Railways has indicated that the revived route will cater to both passenger and freight services, with pricing structured to remain accessible to ordinary Kenyans while supporting the long-term sustainability of the service.

The reopening of the Gilgil–Ol Kalou–Nyahururu line marks a significant milestone in the country's efforts to modernize transport infrastructure, improve regional connectivity, and make affordable mobility available to more citizens.
