Maranda High School will reopen this weekend for Form Four students following an indefinite closure caused by student unrest and the torching of the Owino “B” dormitory. The school was closed in late May after the dormitory fire and subsequent protests by candidates.

According to Chief Principal Edwin Namachanja and the Board of Management (BOM), re-admission will take place in phases on June 5 and June 6, 2026. All Form Four students must report by 10:00 a.m. and be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The administration has set strict conditions for re-entry. Parents must clear all outstanding school fee arrears and pay a mandatory damage restitution fee of KSh 2,695 per student before learners are allowed back into the school.

In addition, the school has announced a special recovery package for 192 Form Four students who were housed in the heavily damaged Owino “B” dormitory. The institution will provide replacement school uniforms (excluding games attire), shoes, mattresses, blankets, bedsheets, and other essential items for the affected learners.

Parents of the affected students will only be required to provide personal hygiene items and replacement metal boxes where necessary.

The reopening follows investigations into the dormitory fire, which reportedly caused damage estimated at about KSh 2.8 million and led to the arrest and prosecution of several students on arson-related charges.
