A Kenyan nanny has turned what is often viewed as ordinary domestic work into a thriving six-figure profession by specializing in childcare for diplomats, expatriate families, and United Nations officials.
Caroline Okun, whose inspiring journey was featured on the cover of the Daily Nation's DN2 lifestyle magazine, has built a successful career that now earns her up to Sh100,000 a month while providing opportunities to travel the world.
Caroline's journey began under challenging circumstances. Her first housekeeping job paid just Sh1,500 per month, and she endured poor working conditions, including mistreatment and, at times, being denied food.
Determined to change her fortunes, she deliberately shifted her focus to working for diplomatic and expatriate families, a decision that dramatically transformed both her income and professional life.
Today, depending on the terms of the contract and the duration of a diplomat's posting, Caroline earns up to Sh100,000 every month. Her expertise in childcare has also seen her accompany employers on international assignments, taking her to countries including Germany, the United Kingdom, and India.
Beyond the financial rewards, Caroline has embraced professional employment standards. She works structured hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., enjoys weekends with her family, and insists on formal written contracts for every job, including those involving overseas travel.
Having achieved financial stability, Caroline has also become an employer herself. She now hires a domestic nanny to care for her own children, saying she is committed to treating her employee with the same dignity, fairness, and respect that she expects from the families she serves.
