Moi University remains burdened by a deep financial crisis, with accumulated debt exceeding KSh 8 billion and pending bills now surpassing KSh 10 billion, even as the institution reports major progress in restoring normal academic operations.

Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Education, the university's interim management, led by Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Kiplagat Kotut and Council Chairperson Prof. Noah Midamba, disclosed that the institution is technically insolvent, with liabilities outweighing its assets by KSh 8.6 billion.

The management attributed the crisis to years of declining student enrolment, which dropped from more than 40,000 at its peak to about 12,000, leaving personnel costs unsustainable. To keep the university afloat, the institution is seeking an additional KSh 1.9 billion from the government to meet recurrent expenses, including staff salaries for the 2026/2027 financial year.

As part of its recovery plan, the university is undertaking a workload assessment that could result in staff layoffs, targeting positions deemed underutilized. The institution also continues to grapple with KSh 1.25 billion in salary arrears under the 2017–2021 collective bargaining agreement, alongside outstanding pension and statutory deductions.
