Mohamed Salim Ahmed, a 52-year-old veteran diver from Mombasa, is seeking recognition for decades of service in some of East Africa's most dangerous maritime disaster and rescue operations.
Ahmed, who hails from Mvita, developed an interest in diving while still in school before undergoing professional training with German instructors at the Bandari Maritime Academy. He later obtained advanced certifications in Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR).
A former Kenya Navy diver, Ahmed has taken part in several high-risk rescue and recovery missions. Among the major operations he was involved in was the 1994 MV Mtongwe ferry tragedy, where he participated in rescue and body-recovery efforts following the vessel's capsizing.
He also assisted in operations following the 1996 MV Bukoba disaster on Lake Victoria, further cementing his reputation as an experienced maritime rescue specialist.
Currently, Ahmed serves as a Divisional Fire Brigade Officer with the Mombasa County Government and leads the Municipal Rescue Team.
Despite his decades of service and involvement in major rescue operations, Ahmed remains largely unrecognized at the national level. His story has renewed calls for greater recognition of local maritime heroes who have risked their lives to save others.
His career highlights the often-overlooked contribution of professional divers and rescue personnel who operate in dangerous conditions during maritime disasters and emergencies across the region.
