Public secondary school principals will, for the first time, appear before the National Assembly to account for how billions of shillings in government capitation funds have been spent.
The Public Investments Committee (PIC) on Governance and Education has launched the unprecedented oversight exercise targeting schools that manage more than Sh10 million in public funds, following concerns raised in recent Auditor-General's reports.
The hearings will begin with Category C1 national schools, with more than 200 institutions expected to face scrutiny before the exercise is expanded to Category C2, C3 and C4 schools.
Members of Parliament say the probe is aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability in the management of public resources allocated to schools.
However, principals, through the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA), have welcomed the audit while maintaining that delayed government capitation disbursements and significant funding shortfalls have made financial management and reporting more difficult.
