The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has removed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from his position as Secretary General following a resolution adopted by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), marking one of the biggest internal political developments within the party in recent months.
According to ODM leadership, the decision followed recommendations from the party’s Internal Disputes Resolution Committee after reviewing allegations of misconduct and internal disciplinary concerns. Party officials stated that the NEC unanimously endorsed the recommendation to remove Sifuna from office.
The fallout comes after months of visible internal differences within ODM over the party’s political direction, particularly on engagement and cooperation talks with the ruling administration and wider coalition strategy.
Supporters of the move argue the party acted to reinforce internal discipline and collective decision-making, while critics view the development as a sign of growing divisions within one of Kenya’s major political formations ahead of future political realignments.
However, the leadership change has not been without legal contest. Previous attempts to remove Sifuna had been challenged before the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, which at one point suspended implementation pending further proceedings.
