Children from Nairobi’s Mathare informal settlement are being encouraged to dream beyond their surroundings through a unique initiative combining mentorship, mental wellness and technology-driven inspiration.
During celebrations marking the International Day of the African Child, learners at Mcedo Beijing School were treated to an unconventional learning experience designed to expand their imagination and ambitions.
Rather than delivering a traditional motivational speech, Chinese digital influencer Masika Yang introduced the children to an educational technology film that explored advanced aerospace innovation and offered a glimpse into the daily life of astronauts.
The experience sparked excitement and curiosity among the learners, many of whom responded by drawing their own visions of life in space and sharing aspirations to become astronauts, pilots, doctors and teachers.
At the centre of the initiative is counselling psychologist Verah Adhiambo, who grew up in Mathare and has dedicated her work to creating opportunities and support systems for children in her community. Through a counselling club established at the school, she provides guidance and mental health support while helping learners build confidence and broaden their outlook on the future.
The initiative demonstrates how exposure, mentorship and emotional support can shape ambition and help children see possibilities beyond the limitations often associated with informal settlements.
