A major political realignment is taking shape in Western Kenya after a group of leaders allied to the Linda Mwananchi movement endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as their preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.
The endorsement, reached during a reported 10-hour strategy meeting hosted by Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya at his home, signals what could become a significant breakaway from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the formation of a new regional political outfit.
Among those said to have attended the meeting were Godfrey Osotsi, Majimbo Kalasinga and Wamboka Wanami, who reportedly agreed that Sifuna should carry the Linda Mwananchi movement's presidential ticket in 2027.
Governor Natembeya is reported to have shelved his own presidential ambitions to concentrate on defending his Trans Nzoia gubernatorial seat while spearheading the region's political mobilization behind Sifuna. He also announced plans to unveil a new political party within the next three weeks, describing it as the region's principal electoral vehicle ahead of the 2027 polls.
According to the leaders, the new party is intended to replace both ODM and the Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-K) as the region's dominant political platform. They argue that the outfit will help consolidate Western Kenya's estimated 7.5 million votes and protect the region from being "politically used" in future coalition arrangements.
The development marks what supporters describe as a generational shift in opposition politics and the emergence of a "third force" outside the country's traditional political alliances.
