The Government has defended the establishment of a quarantine facility at Laikipia Air Base, saying the project is part of Kenya's broader disease preparedness strategy and not an isolated initiative.
Speaking during a media roundtable at Wajir State Lodge, President William Ruto emphasized that the health and safety of Kenyans remain the government's top priority amid concerns over the Ebola threat. He said the government is implementing comprehensive measures to prevent, detect, and manage any potential Ebola cases while strengthening the country's public health response capabilities with support from international partners, including the United States.
The President noted that Kenya's longstanding partnership with the United States has been instrumental in supporting responses to major public health challenges such as HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, and Ebola.
Addressing concerns surrounding the Laikipia Air Base facility, Ruto clarified that it is one of 23 quarantine and isolation centres established under Kenya's national disease preparedness framework. Other facilities are located at Kenyatta National Hospital, the National Police Service Hospital, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital, and Alupe Hospital, among others.
He said the facilities are intended solely to strengthen the country's capacity to respond to health emergencies and protect public health. The President added that similar partnerships and preparedness measures proved effective during the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to enhance Kenya's ability to manage future outbreaks.
Ruto urged political leaders and stakeholders to avoid politicising public health interventions, stressing that disease preparedness efforts are designed to safeguard all Kenyans regardless of political affiliation.
The President also highlighted progress on key development projects in Northern Kenya, saying the government remains committed to unlocking the region's economic potential, expanding opportunities for residents, and accelerating inclusive growth.
