Safaricom Plc has announced the resignation of its Chief Financial Services Officer (CFSO), Esther Masese Waititu, with her final day at the telecommunications company set for July 31, 2026.
Waititu joined Safaricom in February 2023 from KCB Group and has spent nearly three years leading the company's financial services division, overseeing the growth and management of the M-Pesa ecosystem, including digital payments, Fuliza overdraft services, and mobile lending products.
During her tenure, she spearheaded the modernization of M-Pesa by overseeing its migration to the cloud-native Fintech 2.0 platform. She also led the rollout of Ziidi Trader in February 2026, a platform that enables Kenyans to buy and sell shares listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange directly through their mobile devices.
Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Peter Ndegwa has appointed Boniface Mungania, the company's Director of Public Sector Digital Transformation, as the interim Chief Financial Services Officer pending the appointment of a substantive replacement.
Waititu's resignation comes amid a series of senior leadership changes at Safaricom. In recent months, former Chief Strategy Officer Michael Mutiga left to head Stanbic Bank Kenya, while former M-Pesa Africa CEO Sitoyo Lopokoiyit joined Absa Bank.
Her departure also coincides with Safaricom's Annual General Meeting scheduled for July 31, 2026, during which majority shareholder Vodacom is expected to formalize its corporate control of the company.
