Summertides Festival has sparked heated debate in Malindi, with residents and religious leaders expressing concern over some of the activities witnessed during the beach event.
Critics argue that aspects of the festival promoted public indecency and conflicted with the town's cultural and religious values. Some residents drew comparisons to the biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, saying the event reflected a decline in moral standards and calling for stricter regulation of similar gatherings.
The controversy has reignited discussion over the balance between promoting tourism and preserving local traditions in the coastal town, which is home to communities with strong Christian and Islamic beliefs.
Supporters of the festival, however, defended the event, saying it attracted visitors, boosted business for hotels, restaurants and other local enterprises, and created income-generating opportunities for young people. They argued that such events play an important role in strengthening Malindi's tourism industry and local economy.
